Estimate value
£ 600 – 900
Cricketers' Almanack for 1879. London: John Wisden & Co., [1879].
Sixteenth edition, the first to substitute a simple calendar for the day-by-day almanack commemorating past events; this change was to remain permanent. There is a detailed report on the famous Australian victory at Lord’s on 27 May (pp.26-29): ‘Spofforth made such havoc with the M.C.C. sticks that in 6 overs he actually took 6 wickets (3 in one over) for 4 runs!’ However, space did not exist to give the full scores of all 40 matches played by the Australians.
Octavo (160 x 104mm). 239, [1]pp., with 6pp. ads at end. Original printed yellow wrappers (rebacked with portions of original spine laid down, wrappers lightly discoloured and soiled with the lettering slightly faded, upper tips of bother wrappers expertly repaired, mark of adhesive label removed on inside front wrapper but without loss or obscuring letters).
