Yantra with a wrathful deity and devotional image with Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā. - India, 19th and 20th c. - I: The yantra consists of an eight-petalled lotus blossom enclosed in a frame. Inside the flower is a hexagram (Sanskrit: ṣaṭkoṇa), in the centre of which a wrathful, fourteen-armed deity sits on another lotus flower against a dark background. The hand attributes refer to both Viṣṇuitic (e.g. snail horn and throwing wheel) and śivaitic (e.g. trident and third eye) symbolism. The wrathful aspect is iconographically underlined by the wildly protruding hair. II: The circular image area shows the Hindu god Kṛṣṇa in the centre accompanied by his consort Rādhā dancing. The scene is framed by a group of dancing persons who strongly resemble the pair of gods. The motif goes back to older models showing Kṛṣṇa in the company of shepherdesses (Sanskrit: gopī) at playful dancing (Sanskrit: rāsalīlā). The fact that Kṛṣṇa is shown multiplied here refers to the religious dances known as raslila, which are mainly performed in the region around Braj, the centre of Kṛṣṇa worship in the Indian union state of Uttar Pradesh. I: Das Yantra besteht aus einer achtblättrigen Lotusblüte, die von einem Rahmen eingefasst ist. Im Innern der Blüte ist ein Hexagramm (Sanskrit: ṣaṭkoṇa) abgebildet, in dessen Mitte eine zornvolle, vierzehnarmige Gottheit vor einem dunklen Hintergrund auf einer weiteren Lotusblüte sitzt. Die Handattribute verweisen sowohl auf viṣṇuitische (z.B. Schneckenhorn und Wurfrad) als auch auf śivaitische (z.B. Dreizack und drittes Auge) Symbolik. Der zornvolle Aspekt wird ikonographisch durch das wild abstehende Haar unterstrichen. II: Die kreisförmige Bildfläche zeigt in der Mitte den hinduistischen Gott Kṛṣṇa in Begleitung seiner Gefährtin Rādhā beim Tanz. Die Szene ist gerahmt von einer Gruppe tanzender Personen, die dem Götterpaar stark ähneln. Das Motiv geht zurück auf ältere Vorlagen, die Kṛṣṇa in Begleitung der Hirtinnen (Sanskrit: gopī) beim spielerischen Tanzvergnügen (Sanskrit: rāsalīlā) zeigen. Dass Kṛṣṇa hier vervielfältigt gezeigt wird, verweist auf die als Raslila bezeichneten religiösen Tänze, die vor allem in der Region um Braj, dem Zentrum der Kṛṣṇa-Verehrung im indischen Unionsstaat Uttar Pradesh, aufgeführt werden. Dabei treten zahlreiche Tänzerinnen und Tänzer gemeinsam als göttliches Paar auf.
