«История русской жизни с древнейших времён» представляет собой обширный труд по истории русской культуры мало изученного дохристианского периода. Забелин хотел выяснить все самобытные основы русской жизни и её заимствования у других народов — у финнов, норманнов, греков, татар и немцев. Разбирая идейные основы русской культуры, он отмечает важное значение экономических отношений в истории политики и культуры. В данной работе автор отстаивает самобытность славян и уходит от норманнской теории.
