SN 173184. The left cover marked Eagle / "M" over "149", the right one "T" above Zeiss Logo over "7x50 / 173184". Both covers with levers to adjust the filter setting from (tr.) "Search light" to "Sun" to "No filter", with a horizontal coupling bar. Smooth operation, filters intact (but need alignment), the locking button on the right lever missing. Smooth diopter adjustment. Rubber eye cups, the left one brittle with some minor cracks. Graticule on the right with dual illumination system, the illumination device and the screw caps missing. Original finish of smooth greenish paint, with the usual signs of wear. On the lower bridge attachment screw to fix binoculars on the RZA, therefore no carrying latches. Weight 1.6 kg. Transparency 1-, a small area of the lense bonding in the left tube dissolved, but not visible. Extremely rare!
These highly sought-after binoculars feature a unique stepped reticle illumination system, tailor-made for use with torpedo tube targeting devices on e.g. "S-Boats" or cruisers.
Provenance: ex-collection Robert Legrande Johnstone: according to his son Mr. Johnstone had received these binoculars from General Charles Maclaren as gift. The General in turn had "captured" these binoculars after the surrender of German U-190 to the Canadian Navy in May of 1945.
