Le arti che vanno per via nella cità di Venezia. Venice: [published by Antonio Maria Zanetti the Elder], 1753.
First edition, an exceptional copy finely coloured and elegantly bound for Antonio Maria Zanetti, who commissioned the work. Connoisseur, collector, patron, publisher and artist, Zanetti was a major figure in cultural circles of Venice. He was especially proud of his print collection (‘[it] exceeds anything that might be expected of a private citizen’ (Haskell, Patrons and Painters, p.342), and he published numerous works of prints, most notably by the Tiepolos. The binding of his copy of Zompini is similar to his copies of Canaletto etchings in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, and Tiepolo Albums in the National Gallery of Art, Washington; it shows his coat of arms with the Habsburg eagle, which he added after 1761 when he was made a count by the Empress Maria Theresa. Zompini depicts artisans, itinerant street sellers, pedlars and beggars of Venice, providing visual insight into mid 18th-century Venetian life. The original drawings for the work are preserved in the Museo Correr, Venice (G.D. Romanelli, Drawings from Venice, cat. expo., New York, The Drawing Center, 1985, no. 84). The work proved highly popular and further editions followed in 1785 and 1789, and a London edition in 1803. An album of prints by Zanetti and Tiepolo (Raccolta di varie Stampe a chiaroscuro), identically bound as the present work was sold at Christie’s on 9 Dec. 1998, lot 127. Colas 3120; Lipperheide Jba 24 (1785 ed.).
Broadsheet folio (429 x 291mm). Etched title, two index plates printed on one leaf, and 60 engraved and etched plates by and after Zompini, each numbered and with engraved caption, all finely coloured by a contemporary hand, on laid paper (occasional small paint blot). Contemporary Italian mottled calf tooled in gilt with large armorial of A. M. Zanetti the Elder on each cover, gilt spine, exuberant floral endpapers, gilt edges (minor discreet repairs at spine and corners). Provenance: Antonio Maria Zanetti the Elder (1679-1767; binding).
