Alfred Richard was a Mauritian painter of French origin.
Richard, a leading Mauritian painter of the mid-19th century, painted Mauritian landscapes and portraits, but is particularly interesting today as a skilled genre painter. He sketched and portrayed the multifaceted character of the Mauritian population, its descendants from French colonizers, Indian planters, and Chinese traders. Richard's works are numerous and varied. An album of his drawings Types mauriciens was published in 1840 by Devaux & compagnie and served as the basis for numerous lithographs.
Alfred Richard also painted portraits of local celebrities and a number of landscapes, including the Savannah Plain and Rivière Noire.
