Auguste Cadolle
Auguste Cadolle, full name Auguste Jean-Baptiste Cadolle, was a French landscape painter.
Cadolle became famous for his views of Moscow, Russia. He worked in the genre of urban landscape, in 1824-1844 he exhibited his works in the Paris Salon. In 1819-1825 Auguste Cadolle lived and worked in Moscow, where he created a large number of drawings and watercolors with views of the city. Returning to Paris, in 1825 he published his first work "Views of Moscow". His landscapes depict Moscow rebuilt after the fire of 1812 during Napoleon's invasion.
Cadolle created a number of unique views of Moscow, characterized by the accuracy of the cityscape and the smallest details, including characters' costumes, architectural details and even the weather. His works "Circular Panorama of Moscow with the Spasskaya Tower of the Kremlin" (1819-1823), "View of the Triumphal Arch in Moscow" (1820s) and others are impressive. Most of the works were printed in the famous French workshop of Gottfried Engelmann.
Four watercolors by the artist are kept in the State Historical Museum of Russia.
