Edmund Carl Ferdinand Maria Steppes (1873 - 1968)
Edmund Carl Ferdinand Maria Steppes
Edmund Carl Ferdinand Maria Steppes was a German landscape painter. In 1893 he exhibited successfully at the Munich Kunstverein. In the years leading up to the turn of the century, Steppes was able to establish itself in the German art scene and continued to be successful in the following decade. A number of exhibitions ensured the increasing level of awareness of the young artist, who was able to sell his works to state museums as well as to private clients. His artistic style, which at the beginning of his creative period had followed the usual conventions of landscape painting, became increasingly individual around 1905. In the period after the First World War until around 1923, the artist was conspicuously busy with the medium of drawing and with detailed observations of nature. With a sensitive eye for even the smallest details, he translated his impressions into predominantly small-format drawings and watercolors.
