Rieter received his art education in Switzerland, worked in France and Germany, and in 1804 came to Copenhagen, where he studied the costumes of the inhabitants of the region. As a result, a set of prints depicting the national costumes of Denmark was published, which Rieter prepared together with the artist Johannes Zenn (1780-1861).
