Bambocciade

Bambocciade is the genre name of a small group of Dutch and Flemish artists who worked in Rome in the first half of the 17th century, grouped first around Pieter van Laer and then in the Bent group. The Bamboccianti painters mainly painted small pictures of scenes from the life of common people: frolicking children, vagrants and beggars, itinerant actors and peasants. In Italy and at home, bambocciade was criticised as a low genre.
