Henri Heerbrandt was a Belgian self-taught artist who created figurative and abstract works that defied classification. He drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including ancient cultures and mythology, and used his cynical sense of humor to create caricatures of politicians and colleagues. He experimented with various techniques and mediums, including watercolors, gouaches, oils, lithographs, woodcuts, and collages. Despite having few friends and many enemies, Heerbrandt's work was appreciated by collectors and exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Biennials in Venice, Ljubljana, and Sao Paulo, as well as the US. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh have a fine collection of his works. The Group 2 Gallery has organized several one-man shows of Heerbrant and published an illustrated monograph about the artist in 1991.
