NORTHERN SCHOOL CIRCA 1515, THE MARTYRDOM OF SAINT SEBASTIAN, OIL ON PANEL

This small and enigmatic painting, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, shares some similarities with illuminated manuscripts of the first half of the 16th Century; the finesse of handling and the detail of the composition recall works such as Simon Bening’s Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, now in the Getty (Ms. 3, leaf 2v (84.ML.83.2.verso), fig. 1). The landscape can also be compared to those executed by followers of Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400-1464), such as the group that is now elegantly coined the Master of the Embroidered Foliage (active 1490-1510). From the latter, the painter appears to have borrowed the delicacy of the trees and plants, and the figure of the saint, whilst the more robust archers are closer to Bening’s model. It can be concluded that the artist of the present painting was acquainted with the multiple artistic currents that existed at the beginning of the 16th Century in the Habsburg Netherlands, the historic region that existed between France and the Holy Roman Empire. However, for the moment his name remains a mystery to be solved.

In contrast, the subject of the painting is easily recognisable, and sits within a long iconographic tradition within European art. Under Diocletian (244-311/312), the fervent christian Sebastian took up a military career to help his fellow believers and strengthen their faith. At the end of Diocletian’s reign, the persecution of Christians resumed in order to guarantee the unity of the empire. Four edicts, promulgated in 303 and 304, aimed to outlaw Christian worship, these imposed the death penalty on anyone refusing to worship the gods of the Roman pantheon. Rumours of various miracles performed by Sebastian led him to be denounced to the Emperor, who condemned him to be tied to a post and shot with arrows. Presumed for dead, he was abandoned by the guards. However, according to tradition, his wounds were miraculously healed by Saint Irene. A few days later, he appeared at the palace and reproached Diocletian and Maximian Hercules (circa 250-310) for their attitude towards the Christian community. They then had him beaten with rods, leading to his death and final martyrdom.
