ÉTIENNE ALLEGRAIN, LANDSCAPE OF THE ROMAN COUNTRYSIDE, OIL ON CANVAS

Though the surname Allegrain may evoke an entire dynasty of artists who embraced several disciplines, Etienne (1644-1736) must be seen as the founder of this important Ancient Régime family, and the beginning of their artistic heritage.

The author of accomplished 'house portraits', he painted views of the park of Versailles for Louis XIV, intended to adorn the walls of the Trianon and the Menagerie of the great château. A spectacular view of the Bosquet de la salle des Conseils painted in 1688 (musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon, Versailles, inv. no. MV 754) and the vue de l’Isle de Versailles (Galerie du Grand Trianon, Versailles, inv. no. MV 752) stand as witness to his talent for this specific genre.

These royal commissions highlight the brilliance of a painter who inherited Poussin's (1595-1665) classical vision and who spent his career imagining idealised, 'heroic' landscapes. These can be best understood by considering the contemporary description of the great critic Roger de Piles’ (1635-1709): ‘The heroic style is a composition of objects that, by their character, draw from art and nature all that both can produce that is great and extraordinary’, (see A. Lossel-Guillien, 'À la recherche de l'œuvre d'Étienne Allegrain, paysagiste de la fin du règne de Louis XIV', Histoire de l'art, 1988, 4, pp. 69-78).

Populated by imaginary buildings and figures that exist out of time, Allegrain's paintings invite the viewer to reflect on the sublime and the vanity of human existence, themes that would still be as important to the neoclassical painters of more than a century later thanks to the influence of these works of the Golden Age of French painting.
