A GEORGE III ROYAL PRESENTATION SILVER ARCHERY PRIZE BUGLE

APPARENTLY UNMARKED, ATTRIBUTED TO JEFFREYS AND JONES, LONDON, CIRCA 1790

Of typical form, decorated with bands of oak leaves on matted ground between guilloche bands, the front applied with the Prince of Wales's feathers, engraved with inscription, complete with chain, silver and green tassels, and a clasp applied with the Prince of Wales's feathers, interior gilt, contained in original fitted red leather case with part paper label

9 7/8 in. (25 cm.) long

9 oz. 13 dwt. (300 gr.), excluding clasp

The inscription reads, 'This Prize, the Gift of His R: H: George Prince of Wales, to the Society of Royal British Bowmen; Shot for at Acton Park, Sept: 3d: 1790; was won by Robert Hesketh Esq.; at the distances of 64; 96; & 128 yards'.





Provenance

Prince George, Prince of Wales, later King George IV (1820-1830), of Great Britain and Ireland, presented to,

Robert Hesketh (1764-1824) of Rossall Hall, co. Lancaster, at Acton Park, co. Denbigh, the seat of Sir Roger Cunliffe, on 3 September 1790.
