MARK OF LOUISA COURTAULD AND GEORGE COWLES, LONDON, 1771

The three oviform vases chased with ribbon-tied laurel garlands, the lower bodies chased with acanthus foliage, the detachable covers with acorn finials, the bodies and covers each engraved with a crest with baron's coronet above, marked on bases and covers, in contemporary velvet lined mahogany case with bone keyhole escutcheon, the cover with hinged shell and scroll handle

The crest is the ancient badge of the Curzon family, for Sir Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Baron Scarsdale (1726-1804). He married Caroline, eldest daughter of Charles, 2nd Earl of Portmore 1750. He was elevated to the peerage on 9 April 1761 as Baron Scarsdale.
