A RARE GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER COIN-SET LARGE WAGER CUP OR JUNGFERNBECHER
MARK OF HEINRICH NIEDERSTADT II, PADERBORN, CIRCA 1720
Formed as a maiden with detachable torso and a wide-bodied skirt holding aloft a reeded tapering cup on twin-scroll caryatid supports, the swinging upper cup inset with a Friedrich I of Saxe-Coburg-Altenburg (1680-1691) 1 ½ thaler commemorating his admission into the Pegnitz-Schafer order, and other inset thalers, the lower cup inset with a further twenty-four thalers dated early 16th century to 1712, including two Paderborn ones for Archbishops Herman Werner and Franz Adolf Wolff Metternich zur Gracht, on a finely chased foliate ground, engraved to the rim with the accollé coat-of-arms, marked on rim of skirt and bowl

The arms are those of Asseburg of Prussia and Wolff Metternich zur Gracht of Prussia, Baden and Limburg for Ernst Konstantin von der Asseburg (1666-1726), Freiherr von der Asseburg-Hinnenburg and his wife Lucie Wolff Metternich (1680-1747). They were married in 1699.

From the estate of Hermann Werner Franz Gottlob von der Asseburg (1702-1779), Schloss Hinnenburg, Colonel of the Household (Lord Chamberlain) and Minister to Clemens August (1700-1761), Prince-Elect of Cologne and Archbishop of Padernborn and then by descent.
