Biblicae historiae, magno artificio depictae. Frankfurt-am-Main: Christian Egenolph, 1539.
First edition, illustrated by Beham’s fine woodcuts of Old Testament scenes. The woodcuts were commissioned for a 1533 Biblicae historiae, also printed by Egenolph, whose text consisted of brief Biblical quotations in both Latin and German. In the present edition the German Protestant Reformer Aemilius compiled extended Biblical texts for each of Beham’s scenes. ‘Close copies of some of the same cuts were used in the Coverdale Bible of 1535 and in Tyndal's New Testament 1536’ (Fairfax-Murray. Adams A-228; Pauli, Hollstein 271-358; Bartsch 1-73; VD16 A 329; Davies, Fairfax-Murray German 65.

Quarto (178 x 128mm). Full woodcut historiated title border and 80 woodcuts by H.S. Beham, with his woodcut monogram on the title-page (numerous leaves discreetly reinforced at hinge, occasional small, light stain or spotting, some light browning). Early 20th-century vellum over pasteboard, spine lettered, red edges; brown buckram slipcase. Provenance: early annotations in a tiny hand on first 4 text pages (washed and faded) – Johann Franz Schefold (1750-1828, jurist; signature stamp on title-page) – Carl J. Ulmann (bookpate, notes at end) – Sam Josefowitz (Lugt 6094); by descent to the present owners.
