SAMMELBAND – Collection of three classics in German translations.
CAESAR, Gaius Julius (100-44 B.C.E.) [Commentaries.] Caii Julii Cesaris des grossmechtigen ersten römischen Keysers Historien vom Gallier und der Römer burgerische Krieg. Mainz: Schöffer, July 1532. [With:] THUCYDIDES (c.460-c.400 BCE). [Peloponnesian War.] Von dem Peloponnenser krieg. In acht bücher gethailt darinnen von wunderlichen selttzamen hendlen un[d] kriegen, so die Griechen under inen gehabt, begriffen. Augsburg: Heinrich Stayner, 16 June 1533. [With:] VALERIUS MAXIMUS (fl. 30 C.E.). Von geschichten der Römer und aussers volcks. Strasbourg: Jacob Cammerlander, 1533.
Collection of three extremely rare editions of classics of the ancient world, two of which translated into, and published in German for the first time, and two of which richly illustrated with woodcuts. The first work is Schöffer’s second edition of Caesar’s De bello Gallico and De bello civili, and like his first edition of 1530, it is very rare. In addition to the texts of Caesar, it also contains Plutarch's biography of Caesar as well as pieces from Hirtius on the wars in Africa and Spain. The translation was made by Ringmann (1482-1511), and beautifully illustrated, with the 14 full-page woodcuts are from editions of Horace and Terence by Grüninger in Strasbourg from around 1500; the smaller woodcuts come from Schöffer's Livy and other prints. The second work is the first edition of the first translation of Thucydides into German, executed by Hieronymus Boner, mayor of Colmar. The illustrations are by various artists, with the title woodcut and another nine woodcuts by Jörg Breu the Younger, and the others by Hans Burgkmair and Hans Schäuffelein. The final work is the first edition of the first translation of Valerius Maximus’ Factorum dictorumque memorabilium libri IX into German. References: 1: VD16 C-57; 2: VD16 T-1128; Adams T-683; 3: VD16 V-152.

3 works in one volume, folio (293 x 190mm). 1: 117 text woodcuts, 14 of which full-page, large woodcut printer’s device on colophon (ink trials in margins of E2-3 and M2, marginal tears to L1 and c2 without loss, Y2 with marginal tear just affecting one letter, title and following leaves lightly stained and soiled, some variable browning from middle to end occasionally affecting a few leaves more heavily); 2: large title woodcut, two full-page woodcuts and 47 woodcuts in the text, woodcut tailpieces (occasional, mostly faint browning, soiling and staining); 3: printer’s mark on final leaf, large woodcut initials (title with tiny marginal chip, some light spotting, browning and staining, more heavily affecting the last few leaves). 18th-century half sheep, spine richly gilt with red and green morocco gilt lettering pieces, red edges (head of spine torn and loose, extremities rubbed, foot of spine and corners heavily).
