Henry Stevens's copy of the first edition of one of the earliest works on the flora and fauna of the American Northeast. Josselyn first visited New England in 1638-1639, and returned again for a longer stay from 1663 to 1671. This work comments on the medical uses and abuses of various flora and fauna, including tobacco. "Josselyn included many medical and surgical observations with his American botanical descriptions, and also provided one of the best contemporary English accounts of New Netherland" (Streeter). Two parts in one volume, octavo (144 x 87mm). Publisher's woodcut device on recto of license leaf, 3 pp. of publisher's ads (license leaf remarged at gutter, one leaf with outer margin restored just touching letters, other small repairs and stains). Red morocco gilt signed by W. Pratt for H. Stevens, 1874, edges gilt. Provenance: Henry Stevens (1819-1886, American bibliographer; binding signature; his sale, Sotheby's, 11 July 1881, lot 239) – Anson Phelps Stokes (1838-1913, American banker; bookplate stating inheritence to:) – Rev.
