ARISTOTELES (384-322 B.C.E.)

[Opera. Vol. I, part 2:] Physica. Venice: Andreas Torresanus, de Asula and Bartholomaeus de Blavis, de Alexandria, 2 October 1483.

Wide-margined copy of this rare early edition of Aristotle’s Physics in this anonymous Latin translation with the commentary of Ibn Rushd, otherwise known as Averroes of Cordoba, and edited by Nicoletus Vernia. This is the second part of the first volume of Aristotle’s works produced by Andreas Torresanus and Bartholomaeus de Blavis between 1 February and 25 October 1483. Aristotle’s Physics is a fundamental text of Western natural philosophy. As Martin Heidegger wrote, ‘This book determines the warp and woof of the whole of Western thinking … Without Aristotle’s Physics there would have been no Galileo’ (The Principle of Reason). This work combines the important Aristotelian commentary of the greatest Muslim philosopher of the West, Ibn Rushd, or Averroes (1126-1198), and the editorship of Vernia (1420-1499). One of the leading Aristotelians of the 16th century, Vernia taught philosophy at the University of Padua from 1465 almost to his death. HC 1660*; BSB-Ink A-701; GW 2337; IGI 794; Klebs 82.2; Goff A-962 ; ISTC ia00962000.

Folio (423 x 288mm). 159 leaves (of 160, lacking final blank). Double column, gothic types 3:74G and 8:93G, printed paragraph numbers, initial spaces blank (a few little wormholes, mostly confined to margins of quires towards end, marginal stain affecting fore edge of about a dozen leaves, a few tiny insignificant marginal tears). Later calf over wooden boards, panelled in blind and with 5 brass bosses (repaired and restored, covers a bit wormed and scratched, remains of clasps). Provenance: neat and legible marginalia in a number of contemporary and 16th-century hands appearing intermittently throughout, sometimes extensive in places.
