BEERBOHM, Max (1872-1956)
Zuleika Dobson. London: Wiliam Heinemann, 1910.
First edition of Beerbohm's only novel: ‘presentation copy’ blindstamp on titlepage. A satire of undergraduate life at Oxford during the Edwardian era, it includes the now- famous line 'Death cancels all engagements'. From the library of the popular historical and travel writer and biographer Philip Guedalla, possibly a gift from the author.

Octavo (195 x 136mm). Half-title and title printed in black and brown (light age toning). Original terracotta cloth, spine gilt-lettered, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on lower cover (hinges a little cracked but solid, head and tail of spine slightly rubbed); vellum-backed case. Provenance: Philip Guedalla (1889-1944; bookplate) — Alfred Knight (bookplate on endpaper) — Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
