Thomas BURKE (1886-1945). Murder at Elstree. Or Mr. Thurtell and His Gig. London: College Road, 1935.
Original typescript, signed by the author ‘this is the original and only MS of my story ‘Murder at Elstree’ Written July 1935’. Burke was the author of the celebrated short story collection Limehouse Nights (1916) and the mystery story ‘The Hands of Ottermole’, which was voted the best mystery of all time in 1949. Original typescript, 122pp. recto only, corrected throughout with pencil annotations (some dust-soiling) Bound in brown quarter morocco (endpapers with scattered spotting). Provenance: author’s presentation inscription (to title leaf) — N. B. Bradridge (authorial presentation inscription to blank) — three loosely inserted typed letters, two from Bradridge to Burke (dated January 27th and July 13th 1939) and one signed letter from the author to Bradridge.

An excellent copy of the first edition of Doyle’s final Sherlock Holmes novel. Green and Gibson A39a. Octavo. Frontispiece, three leaves of publisher’s ads at end. Original red-pink cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt (lacking the rare dust-jacket as usual, spine ends trivially bumped); housed in red quarter morocco clamshell box.

First edition of this Golden Age detective classic, exceedingly rare in the dust-jacket. Octavo. Original orange cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in black (slightly cocked, minor fading to spine ends, endpapers lightly browned); original green dust-jacket priced at 7/6 on spine (faint diagonal crease to upper panel and flap). Provenance: Gerald G. Dobbs (ownership signature to front free endpaper) — Bertrand Smith (bookseller’s stamp to front pastedown).

Provenance: mathematical calculations on front free endpaper.

Original orange cloth, spine lettered in black (slightly cocked, extremities lightly faded, top edge stained); original dust-jacket, later issue priced at 4/- on front flap (backstrip sunned and ends frayed, a few marks, short closed tears repaired with tape on verso, the backstrip reinforced with paper addition).
