A group of ten volumes, comprising:

Thomas BURKE (1886-1945). Murder at Elstree. Or Mr. Thurtell and His Gig. London: College Road, 1935.
Original typescript, signed by the author ‘this is the original and only MS of my story ‘Murder at Elstree’ Written July 1935’. Burke was the author of the celebrated short story collection Limehouse Nights (1916) and the mystery story ‘The Hands of Ottermole’, which was voted the best mystery of all time in 1949. Original typescript, 122pp. recto only, corrected throughout with pencil annotations (some dust-soiling) Bound in brown quarter morocco (endpapers with scattered spotting). Provenance: author’s presentation inscription (to title leaf) — N. B. Bradridge (authorial presentation inscription to blank) — three loosely inserted typed letters, two from Bradridge to Burke (dated January 27th and July 13th 1939) and one signed letter from the author to Bradridge.

DOYLE, Arthur Conan (1859-1930). The Valley of Fear. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1915.
An excellent copy of the first edition of Doyle’s final Sherlock Holmes novel. Green and Gibson A39a. Octavo. Frontispiece, three leaves of publisher’s ads at end. Original red-pink cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt (lacking the rare dust-jacket as usual, spine ends trivially bumped); housed in red quarter morocco clamshell box.

MACDONALD, Philip (1900-1980). Death On My Left. London. W. Collins Sons Co Ltd., for The Crime Club Ltd., 1933.
First edition of this Golden Age detective classic, exceedingly rare in the dust-jacket. Octavo. Original orange cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in black (slightly cocked, minor fading to spine ends, endpapers lightly browned); original green dust-jacket priced at 7/6 on spine (faint diagonal crease to upper panel and flap). Provenance: Gerald G. Dobbs (ownership signature to front free endpaper) — Bertrand Smith (bookseller’s stamp to front pastedown).

SAYERS, Dorothy L. (1893-1957). In The Teeth of The Evidence and Other Stories. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1939.
First edition of a collection of short stories featuring Sayer’s most famous character Lord Peter Wimsey. Octavo. (Occasional marginal spotting.) Original black cloth, spine lettered in orange (faint spots to lower board); original dust-jacket (backstrip and top edge sunned, edges with a few minor nicks and tiny short tears).

HUME, David [J. V. Turner] (1900-1945). Murders Form Fours. London: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1933.
First edition. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in red (some faint spots); original dust-jacket (rubbed and creased with several nicks and short tears, lower panel marked, backstrip faded with chips to ends of spine resulting in minor loss of letters, light reinforcement to verso).

RONALD, James (1905-1972). They Can’t Hang Me! London: Rich & Cowan Ltd., 1938.
First edition. Octavo. (Light spotting). Original blue cloth, spine lettered in light blue (two white spots to spine); original dust-jacket (lower panel somewhat soiled, backstrip sunned, lightly nicked and creased).

LUCK, Peter [Brenda Cecilia Hopwood] (1878-1959). Crime Legitimate. London: Herbert Jenkins Limited, 1937.
First edition of one of Hopewood’s few novels published under the Peter Luck pseudonym. Octavo. Four leaves of publisher’s ads at end. Original orange cloth, spine and upper cover with titles, lower cover and spine with publisher’s device, all in black (small stain at head of spine); original dust-jacket (creased, folds lightly rubbed and backstrip faintly tanned, a few closed tears, some reinforcement to tears and folds on verso).

KNIGHT, L. A. (fl. c. 1936). Super-Cinema Murder. London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd. [1937].
First edition. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered and upper cover ruled in black (some fading to upper cover, spotting to endpapers and fore-edge); original price-clipped dust-jacket, additional printed price of 2/9 unclipped on front flap beneath printed stick with price 3/- (lightly rubbed and frayed with minor textual loss to publisher’s name and title, glue residue or staining to verso). Provenance: mathematical calculations on front free endpaper.

FARJEON, J. Jefferson (1883-1955). Exit John Horton. London: Collins for The Crime Club, Ltd., 1939.
First edition of this Crime Club book. Octavo. Two leaves of publisher’s ads at end (light spotting, inconsequential split to block in two places). Original orange cloth, spine lettered in black (slightly cocked, extremities lightly faded, top edge stained); original dust-jacket, later issue priced at 4/- on front flap (backstrip sunned and ends frayed, a few marks, short closed tears repaired with tape on verso, the backstrip reinforced with paper addition).

ALLAN, Luke [William Lacey Amy] (1878-1962). Scotland Yard Takes a Holiday. [Bristol]: Arrowsmith, 1934.
First edition of a mystery by the English journalist and author William Lacey Amy, renowned for both his American Westerns and his crime thrillers. Octavo. (Some spotting.) Original orange cloth, spine lettered in black, leaf with list of Allan’s other publications used as front pastedown (minor marks to spine, title partially browned, fore-edge spotted); original dust-jacket (light spotting).
