Further details

DOMENICO GARGIULO CALLED MICCO SPADARO (1609/1610-CIRCA 1675), MOSES AND AARON COLLECTING OFFERINGS TO BUILD THE TEMPLE; MOSES BRINGING FORTH WATER FROM THE ROCK, OIL ON CANVAS, A PAIR, BOTH MONOGRAMMED (LOWER RIGHT AND LOWER LEFT)

These two paintings are one of the rare pairs that Domenico Gargiulo (1609/1610-1675) devoted to biblical themes. A painter known for his scenes of tumultuous Neapolitan life, an assiduous interpreter of volcanic eruptions, epidemics and political polemics, he was also chosen, along with his master Aniello Falcone (1607-1656) and long-time collaborator Viviano Codazzi (c.1604-1670), to create a series of large canvases depicting scenes from ancient Rome for the Buen Retiro palace in Madrid. His choice of subject for this pair of delicately coloured paintings was the life of Moses: Moses and Aaron collect the offerings for the construction of the holy ark, destined to guard the Tables of the Law, and Moses calling forth water from the rock (both taken from the third part of Exodus).
Two other treatments of the second subject are recorded in Gargiulo's oeuvre, a fresco in the Carthusian monastery of San Martino in Naples, and a canvas now in the Museo di San Martino (Naples, inv. DR.398) which is, in all probability, a sketch for the fresco. The decoration of the present painting is more akin to a fresco than a painting, due to the depth of the scene and the complex arrangement of the many figures. However, in the artist's catalogue raisonné, Giancarlo Sestieri suggests that this pair postdates the Neapolitan fresco by around a decade (G. Sestieri, 1994, see above). He sees in it the full maturity of the artist, whose fluid narrative rhythm, with its dense, interweaving looks and attitudes, creates a dynamism that invites the viewers to immerse themselves in the story.
