GALILEI, Galileo (1564-1642). Il Saggiatore. Rome: Giacomo Mascardi, 1623.

First edition of Galileo's famous scientific polemic on the nature of observation and scientific knowledge, with the extra half-sheet of errata printed for Galileo in Florence. This was the final word in the "controversy of the comets," with Galileo stylishly crushing his opponent, the Jesuit Orazio Grassi (despite the fact that the Jesuit was, in this case, entirely correct about the nature of comets). "Generically, it presented personal marginalia in the form of a private letter in a published book; rhetorically, it uncivilly insulted both the overt object of its scorn, the non-existent Lothario Sarsi, and humiliated the covert Orazio Grassi; scientifically, its critiques were largely destructive; philosophically, it is frivolously audacious; theologically, it is provocatively heretical and was understood by some readers to endorse atomism" (Dean and Wilding). Galileo had been forbidden since 1616 to defend Copernican theory and he therefore avoided direct discussion on the earth's motion. Instead he chose to establish a general scientific approach to the investigation of celestial phenomena and he claimed that no theory of comets should be advanced unless it was proved that comets were concrete moving objects and not solar-generated optic effects. The title-page by Francesco Villamena shows the crest of the Barberini displaying the support of Pope Urban VIII, Galileo's patron whom he would later parody as "Simplicius" in the ill-fated Dialogo (see lot 22).

The publication has a complicated bibliographic history which has been misunderstood in the past. This copy is without, as often, the four preliminary leaves of poems, which Dean and Wilding note were included "seemingly at random, present in some copies, and not in others, though possibly with a higher incidence of absence in fine paper copies. It is both present and absent in the authoritative Galilean presentation copies." It includes at the end Galileo's "Nota," an extra half-sheet of errata which he had printed in Florence after seeing the first copies and being disappointed at the number of errors. This half-sheet represents "the best printed presentation of Galileo's intentions with the book" (ibid). Some copies have the first leaf of the half-sheet, which is printed on the bottom side of one page, pasted over the original errata as a cancel. A later issue has a cancel leaf in place of FF6 containing the Tavola, a newly updated and longer errata printed by Mascardi. Carli and Favaro 95; Cinti 73; Norman I, 857 (without preliminary leaves); Riccardi I, 511. For more on the history of the printing of this work and its various issues, see Jason W. Dean and Nick Wilding, “Assaying Il Saggiatore, with a delicate and precise bibliographical balance” in Galilæana XX, 2 (2023): 61-90.

Quarto (219 x 158mm). Corrected state of A1.4, uncorrected state of the diagram on p. 120. Engraved title and full-page portrait of Galileo by Villamoena, engraved diagrams in text vignette on final page, 2 added leaves of errata. (Without preliminary leaves a1-a4 as often, title shorter in outer margin and possibly supplied, some spotting, browning and light waterstaining, small wormtrack in margin of a few leaves, dark marginal stain to final leaf.) Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine (small hole to back cover, spine chipped, a bit stained), modern box. Provenance: erased ownership inscription on title – Giancarlo Beltrame (his sale; Christie's, 13 July 2016, lot 45).
