JACQUES-LAURENT AGASSE, TWO JACK RUSSELLS IN A LANDSCAPE, SIGNED, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED

Born in Switzerland, Jacques-Laurent Agasse (1767-1849), together with Wolfgang Adam Töpffer (1766-1847) and Firmin Massot (1766-1849), formed a Geneva school of painting at the end of the 19th century. Collaborative works in which Töpffer executed the landscapes, Massot the figures and Agasse the animals, which he portrayed with much-appreciated realism, stand as testament to the refined style of this school.

At the beginning of the 1800s, Agasse left for England where animal painting, following in the footsteps of artists such as Stubbs (1724-1806), enjoyed great popularity. Here his paintings of dogs were most highly valued, due to their delicate acuity; they were true "portraits". The present painting can be compared with a collaborative work by Toepffer and Agasse in which the dog on the right is found in a landscape painted by Töpffer (see L. Boissonnas, Wolfgang Adam Töpffer (1766-1847). Catalogue raisonné des Peintures, Berne, 2011, p.354, n°LBP 604).
