Lorsque cette œuvre a été peinte en 1980, Chagall était l'un des grands maîtres vivants du mouvement moderne. Fidèle à l'inspiration qui a nourri son art depuis le début, il continue à peindre avec la même vigueur et la même intensité qu'il a manifestées tout au long de sa vie. Vivant alors à Saint-Paul-de-Vence, il mène une existence paisible et heureuse.
Fleurs et corbeilles de fruits sur la table incarne l'abondance joyeuse et la vivacité, typiques des dernières œuvres de l'artiste. Un luxuriant bouquet de plantes vivaces jaunes, deux généreux paniers en rotin contenant des oranges et des citrons, ainsi qu'un pot en terre cuite contenant des herbes et des fleurs, sont posés sur une table librement construite, se dissipant doucement à l'arrière-plan. Les lignes d'une grande fenêtre éclairée par la lumière du soleil sont perceptibles à gauche, plaçant l'œuvre dans un intérieur concret. Pourtant, les pots et les paniers semblent léviter dans cette idylle printanière. Cette atmosphère éthérée est encore renforcée par la présence des amoureux emblématiques de Chagall au premier plan à gauche. Le couple est en fait l'artiste lui-même et sa première femme bien-aimée, Bella, décédée en 1944, mais qui est restée une source d'inspiration pour l'artiste tout au long de sa vie.
L'abondance et la fraîcheur des fleurs et des produits, associées au symbole fertile du couple entrelacé, témoignent de la vitalité artistique et du bonheur de Chagall à cette époque.La variété et l'éclat des pigments utilisés dans cette composition témoignent également du grand amour de Chagall pour la couleur et de sa maîtrise de celle-ci. Pablo Picasso dit un jour : "Lorsque Matisse mourra, Chagall sera le seul peintre à comprendre ce qu'est vraiment la couleur... Certaines des dernières œuvres qu'il a réalisées à Vence me convainquent qu'il n'y a jamais eu personne depuis Renoir qui ait le même sens de la lumière que Chagall" (Picasso cité dans F. Gilot et C. Lake, Life with Picasso, New York, 1964, p. 282).
When this work was painted in 1980, Chagall was one of the great living masters of the modern movement. Faithful to the inspiration which had fired his art from the beginning, he continued to paint with the same vigor and intensity he had shown throughout his life. Living in Saint-Paul-de-Vence at the time, he led a very peaceful and happy existence.
Fleurs et corbeilles de fruits sur la table embodies the joyful abundance and vibrancy, typical of the artist’s later works. A luscious bouquet of yellow perennials, two bountiful rattan baskets of oranges and lemons, as well as a terracotta pot of growing herbs and garden flowers, all sit atop a loosely constructed table, softly dissipating into the background. The lines of a large window dappled with sunlight are discernable at the left, placing the work within a concrete interior setting. Yet, the pots and baskets seem to levitate within this spring idyll of tiffany, sky and sapphire blues. This ethereal atmosphere is further enhanced by the presence of Chagall’s iconic floating lovers to the left foreground. The couple is in fact the artist himself and his beloved first wife Bella, who died in 1944, but remained a lifelong inspiration for the artist.
The abundance and freshness of the flowers and produce, paired with the fertile symbol of the interlaced couple, attest to Chagall’s artistic vitality and happiness during this period. The variety and vibrancy of pigments used in this composition also testify to Chagall’s great love for and mastery of color. Pablo Picasso once said: “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is… Some of the last things he’s done in Vence convince me that there’s never been anybody since Renoir who has the feeling for light that Chagall has” (Picasso quoted in F. Gilot and C. Lake, Life with Picasso, New York, 1964, p. 282).
