Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricati figura. Amsterdam: Joducus Hondius, 1616.

The Mercator-Hondius atlas with 150 engraved double-page maps, finely coloured by a contemporary hand. The Mercator-Hondius atlas is one of the most important atlases in the history of cartography. First published in 1595 by Mercator, and continued by Hondius, who purchased his plates in 1604. New maps were included in each edition, expanding the 107 maps of the first edition to 150 in the 1613/16 edition. The last digit of the 1616 date on the title page is supplied in manuscript. Van der Krogt I, 1:104.

Hand-coloured engraved title, hand-coloured engraved double-page portrait of Mercator and Hondius, 4 hand-coloured engraved divisional titles, and 150 engraved double-page maps all coloured by a contemporary hand, all woodcut initials coloured by a contemporary hand (variable spotting and offsetting, some maps with strengthening of gutters and margins including maps of Germany [Yyyy], Hassia [Ppppp], Saxonia [Vvvvv], some with short tears repaired, Ooo ‘Aquitania’ with upper right corner expertly restored but text on verso missing , Belgium [Iiii] with bottom left corner restored, India [Rrrrrrr] torn and restored slightly affecting image, ‘Hispania Nova’ [Yyyyyyy] with small portion torn away without affecting image or text, a few maps with tiny holes, last 35 maps with tiny worm hole). Contemporary pigskin over thick paste-board, roll-tooled with a large lozenge design around a central medallion (some rubbing to sides, some minor worming, light wear to corners).
