Collection of autograph and typescript poems, prose, sketches and signed leaves, Isla Negra, Caracas, Temuco and other locations, 1954-1962 and n.d.
Comprising 11 autograph manuscript poems and one typescript poem with autograph annotations, 7 prose manuscripts (some mixed typescript and autograph), 12 leaves with drawings, variant title pages and signatures. Many manuscripts in green ink and some with Neruda's printed fish symbol at header. Provenance: Sotheby's, 19-30 April 1980, lot 529, 26-27 November 1980, lot 382 and 11 November 1982, lot 166 (part lots).
A vibrant collection of poems and prose with playful sketches, many in Neruda's signature green ink. Among the poetry is an autograph fair copy of his major work ‘Alturas de Macchu Picchu’ dedicated to his half-sister, Laura Reyes, the first 6 lines of 'Casa' (published in Poesías: Las piedras de Chile, 1960) and autograph manuscripts of 'Oda al ancla' and 'Oda a las cosa' (published in Navegaciones y regresos, 1960). Many of the other autograph poems are unpublished or variations of published works by Neruda, with ‘Oda a sus manos’ incorporated here into a prose work titled ‘Las mujeres de mi Patria’, and ‘Oda a la tijera’ being a distinct work from ‘Oda a las tijeras’ found in Tercer libro de las odas (1959). Other unpublished poems include 'Oda a la loca', 'Oda al caballo', 'No ames sino el instante' and 'Un traje grande que quedo pequeño'. In addition to a variety of sketched title pages designed with Neruda's signature style of symbols and playful shapes like mermaids, shells and playing cards, are a number of prose works displaying the breadth of his career, including an essay on the painter Nemesio Antúnez, an article titled 'Nota de 1954' on the death of poet and playwright Federico García Lorca and two speeches, one from Neruda's employment as senator for the Chilean Communist Party, and another paying homage to Nicaraguan revolutionary Augusto Sandino in 1959.
