(EARLY MODERN MEDICINE) [Pierre CHIRAC (1650-1732)], LAMARQUE.

In French. 523 pages (approx.) in several paginations, 260 x 190mm, deckled edges (occasional soiling, but overall bright and clean). Contemporary vellum binding.

A medical student's notes from one of Pierre Chirac's unpublished lectures on surgery, anatomy and gynecology. Chirac, one of the leading physicians of his time, began studying medicine at Montpellier in 1680, and began teaching courses in medicine before he received his doctorate. The notes on cardiology are particularly interesting, considering that Chirac authored a significant treatise on the subject in 1692. Chirac would later be appointed the Superintendent of the Royal Garden of Medicinal plants in 1718, and later served physician to Louis XV in 1730. Nothing is known of the student, Leplace, but the name is typical of southwest France. The volume was owned subsequently Jean D'amestoy who identified himself as the "Maitre Chirurgien à Dacotz." Provenance: Lamarque (ownership noted in title, and signature at conclusions of each section) — Jean d'Amestoy (ownership signature on bottom board).
