This elegant portrait shows Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy (1685–1712), Duchess of Burgundy, in the park at Fontainebleau. The daughter of Victor Amadeus II (1666–1732), Duke of Savoy, and Anne Marie d'Orléans (1669–1728), she married Louis of France (1682–1712), Duke of Burgundy, in 1697. He became Dauphin of France after the death of his father, though was not destined to take the throne, predeceasing his grandfather. This union was extremely happy, but the couple's happiness was often frowned upon at a time when faithful love was ridiculed. The young princess also won the hearts of her husband's grandfather, Louis XIV (1638-1715), and his secret wife, Madame de Maintenon (1635-1719). Marie-Adélaïde and Louis had three children, the youngest of whom was the future Louis XV (1710-1774).
Hunting was a great passion for the kings of France: the court enjoyed following the king on the hunt, courtesans and courtiers alike. The uniform worn by the men who took part followed specific rules. The deer hunting outfit was a blue tunic decorated with gold and silver braiding, worn over a jacket and scarlet breeches. The women's outfit was not as restrictive, but followed the male model in the tunic, as shown in the portrait here. Marie-Adélaïde's costume is in the colours of the House of Orléans, perhaps in homage to her mother.
The style of lace ruff worn by the model helps us date the painting. According to tradition, French officers, surprised by the enemy attack on the day of the Battle of Steenkerck in 1692, did not have time to tie their ties. They hastily wrapped them around their necks, threading the ends through the sixth buttonhole of their coats. Subsequently, people began to do the same on a daily basis to celebrate the victory of the surprised soldiers. Whether the story is true or false, the fashion lasted until the very end of the century and was adopted by women for their hunting costumes.
Another version of the portrait (probably the original) was given as a gift to the Savoy family and is currently housed in the Royal Palace of Turin (inv. 720). A sketch for the painting is also kept at the Palace of Versailles (inv. MV 6825).
