Regarding the potential promotion of Brigadier General George H. Gordon, ten days after the Battle of Antietam. Written in van Valkenburgh's hand, the attendant letter from van Valkenburg and Diven recommends the appointment of Brigadier General George H. Gordon as Major General of Volunteers, referencing his West Point education and his injuries during the Mexican-American War. The letter also mentions "we were under his Command at the recent battle of Antietam" – which took place just ten days prior. Van Valkenburgh, a member of the House of Representatives from New York throughout the Civil War, commanded the 107th New York Volunteer Infantry during the Battle of Antietam; Diven, also a New York congressman, served as the Lieutenant Colonel of the 107th during the conflict.
Lincoln pens his endorsement in five lines, stating: "I think Gen. Gordons' [sic] record should be examined with reference to appointing him as a Major General." Gordon would not receive this promotion, however, until breveted as Major General on April 9, 1865. (Heitman). Not published in Basler.
