RENARD, Louis (fl. c.1702-1707) – Reinier OTTENS (1698-1750) and Josua OTTENS (1704-1765)

Atlas van Zeevaert en Koophandel door de Geheele Weereldt. Amsterdam: Reinier and Josua Ottens, 1745.

A fine, crisp hand-coloured copy of the corrected edition of Renard’s Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce (Amsterdam, 1715). This earlier edition utilised plates from Frederik de Wit’s maritime atlas from c.1675, and was subsequently published in a new French edition by R. and J. Ottens in 1739, followed by this 1745 Dutch edition. 7 new charts appear, including Edmund Halley’s world map (4), a map of European postal routes (10) and one of Greenland (32). Renard’s name no longer appears on the plates in this edition and much of the text has been rewritten. The binding with the arms of Count Louis Alexandre Andrault de Langeron, a French general in the service of the Russian army and a renowned bibliophile and collector of Dutch books. Koeman, Ren 3; Phillips, Atlases 601; Shirley BL II, M.Ren-1c.

Tall folio (565 x 360mm). Engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved dedication to the Dutch East India Company, 32 engraved maps with contemporary hand-colouring, of which 27 double-page and 5 folding (last 8 text leaves and one map with faint marginal damp stain, with associated short marginal tears to last 2 text leaves, otherwise a clean crisp copy). Slightly later mottled calf, covers with gilt arms, uncut (rebacked preserving portions of original spine, later spine label, new endpapers, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Count Louis Alexandre Andrault de Langeron (1763-1831; binding Olivier 1508 fer 2).
