Limited edition in a beautiful example of the classic peacock jeweled binding, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. The present is no. 3 of 10 copies specially bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with "an original unpublished composition by E. Geddes, illustrating Quatrain XIII with an illuminated border by Sangorski and Sutcliffe and painted on vellum especially for this copy" (limitation statement).



Quarto (315 x 224mm). Frontispiece with a full-page original watercolor by E. Geddes and signed by him in initials and an illuminated border by Sangorski & Sutcliffe of colors and gilt incorporating the caption “Look to the Rose that Blows.” Color illustrations throughout (some leaves with marginal darkening). Full straight-grained red morocco jeweled binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, blue morocco doublures, all edges gilt and gauffered, two jeweled brass clasps. The upper cover with central oval recessed panel of dark green morocco featuring a peacock with outspread tail, the body inlaid in light green, blue, white and brown morocco, the tail tooled in gold and morocco, peacock feathers tooled in gilt with inlaid blue hearts and set with a circle of 31 amethysts and citrines. Both covers gilt with roses and grasses including rose bouquet cornerpieces and blue morocco gilt inlaid borders. Spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, gilt lettering-pieces in two, gilt-decorated floral and grape onlay panels in the remaining; board edges with gilt rule (a hint of rubbing to some tips). Turn-ins gilt, blue morocco doublures ruled in gilt, blue moiré silk flyleaves. The clasps set with three jewels each (one of the six is chipped). Cloth folding box lined in felt. Provenance: Cornelius J. Hauck, 1893-1967 (bookplate, Cincinnati Museum Center sale, Christie’s New York, 27-28 June 2006, lot 662).
