SCHUMANN, Robert (1810-1856)

Autograph letter signed ('R. Schumann') to an unidentified recipient (presumably his publisher, Julius Kistner), Dresden, 3 May 1849.

In German. Four pages, 217 x 145mm, bifolium, docketed by recipient. Provenance: with J. & J. Lubrano, 2002.

Detailed instructions for the publication of the Spanisches Liederspiel, op. 74. 'Herewith you receive, honoured Sir, the Spanisches Liederspiel, the publication of which I hope may bring you pleasure and profit in the future ... On the small slip of paper [not present] I have indicated how I imagine the layout. First the wrapper, then the main title page, then the table of contents. I leave the decoration to your good taste. But the main title! I would very much like to have it be like the title leaf of my Album, using the same artist. Schuberth provided the title leaf, which you have certainly seen, rather inexpensively, 6 Louis d'or for both the artwork and the preparation of the stone, but this was because I know Professor L. Richter personally, and his son studies composition with me. I certainly think that he will create something for the Liederspiel for me, and you can expect fine and elegant work from him. / But is this too great an expense for you? / The engraving of the Liederspiel itself I imagine to be more dainty than usual ... A border around each individual plate also looks very attractive. I particularly want the lettering of the text not to be too large ... A title page for the issue of the individual numbers of the Liederspiel should also be considered ... Regarding "Der Contrabandist", I think rather that you should add it as an appendix to the complete edition, but also issue it as a single piece with a special title leaf; the former so that it can be inserted as desired in any selection from the whole work, or sung at the end as a gratifying finale'. If Kistner wishes to keep the manuscript of the work, Schumann asks for a copy of two songs to be sent to him as soon as possible, as he has not retained a copy.

Schumann's Spanische Liederspiel was published by Kistner in November 1849.
