Cosway Binding

SOVEREIGNS OF ENGLAND – WORTHINGTON, William Henry, engraver. Portraits of the Sovereigns of England. London: William Pickering, 1824.

“One of the most sumptuous Cosway bindings ever attempted, the front and back covers being literally covered with hand-painted miniatures.” (Boyle catalogue).

Exceptionally fine Cosway binding with 39 portrait miniatures of the Kings and Queens of England: From the collections of both Phoebe A.D. Boyle and Paul Edward Chevalier. The largest of the 39 portraits depicts Edward VII, who reigned from 1901-1910. The miniatures are almost certainly by C.B. Currie and are “most faithfully and superbly executed, the delicate flesh tints being heightened by the brilliant coloring of crowns, medals and costumes, all combining to form a binding of rare beauty” (ibid). The two original binders’ pen-and-ink key sheets for the portraits are preserved.

Folio (348 x 254mm). On large paper. Half-title, printed title (repaired tear at gutter), contents leaf and 36 engraved portraits by Worthington on india paper mounted; extra-illustrated with portraits of the three following monarchs: William IV, Victoria, and Edward VII (as Prince of Wales). Royal blue crushed levant morocco by Rivière and Son, covers with a narrow border of onlaid brown morocco strip between gilt rules, richly decorated with sprays of leafy stemmed red roses, oak boughs, leaves and acorns in onlaid red, three shades of green, and two shades of brown morocco, with 39 miniature portraits on ivory in ovals and roundels—being 19 on the upper cover and 20 on the lower cover; spine in seven compartments with raised bands, gilt-lettered in two compartments, the others with five separate oak and rose onlaid designs, board edges with double gilt rule, turn-ins with five gilt rules and red onlaid corner ornaments, red moiré silk endleaves (lightly frayed), top edge gilt, stamp-signed by Rivière on the upper turn-in. Fleece-lined red morocco pull-off case.

Provenance: Phoebe A.D. Boyle, of Brooklyn (engraved bookplate, her sale, Anderson Galleries New York, 20 November 1923, lot 250) –[purchased at that sale by E.B. Springs for $850] – Paul Edward Chevalier (morocco bookplate, his sale, Christie’s New York, 9 November 1990, lot 73).
