The Webster copy of the first edition in original parts. First state of additional title, reading “100/P” on signpost. The “Chuzzlewit Advertiser” present in all parts, as well as the inserted advertisements, including the rare but essential slip “Neatly bound in cloth” in part 7. This set with an extra copy of part 1. Hatton & Cleaver, 183-212; Eckel, pp. 71-73.



20 parts in 19, octavo. Half-title, ads as in Hatton & Cleaver except without “The Baronial Halls” and “Completion of Maps” in part 17 and with an additional “Eagle Life Assurance Company” laid in part 3. Etched frontispiece, additional title and 38 plates by Hablot K. Browne (toned, scattered foxing and with occasional offsetting in later parts). Original blue-green pictorial wrappers (lightly soiled, most with careful repairs to spine, some bumping to extremities, and minor fraying to part 19/20). Custom red morocco box with chemise by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Provenance: Paul Francis Webster, 1907-1984 (plate on inside of box; his sale Sotheby’s New York 24 April 1985, lot 29).
