TUCKER, Henry Carre (1812-1875)

An album of drawings made in India, England, and elsewhere, the majority signed (‘H.C. Tucker’), 1833-34 and n.d.

283 x 230mm. c.37 drawings by Henry Carre Tucker in total, of which 23 signed, 27 in pencil (occasionally with added wash), 5 in pen-and-wash, 5 in watercolour, various sizes (40 x 60mm to c.180 x 180mm), and 8 transcribed poems and original compositions; with a further c.10 drawings and watercolours apparently in other hands, including two signed by his father Henry St George Tucker (1771-1851), and c.5 transcribed poems in other hands, including one attributed to Henry St George Tucker dated 1844. The drawings variously on the pages of an album, laid down, or tipped in (covers lost, spine remains).

Views of India captured in the 1830s by a young Henry Carre Tucker: the son of a chairman of the East India Company, Tucker would later join the Bengal Civil Service and play a central role during the Indian Rebellion of 1857-8. The Indian drawings include: ‘Dr Butters House at Ghazeepoor’, signed, 19 March 1833, pen-and-wash; ‘View on the Ganges’, signed, n.d., pencil (2); ‘Sketch in the Circular Road Calcutta’, signed, n.d., pencil; ‘Scene in Rajportana [Rajputana]’, signed, n.d., pencil; ‘Suttee Monuments of the Rajahs at Axmutghur’, signed, pen-and-wash; ‘Ruins at Rajmahl [Rajmahal]’, signed, n.d., pencil; ‘Fort of the Azimghur Rajahs in Mehun’, signed, n.d., pencil; ‘Tomb of Rajah at Mehun’, signed, 29th June [1834], watercolour; ‘Nou Rutun’s Mundir’, ‘Moorshedabad’, signed, 28 June 1834, pen-and-wash. Elsewhere, the drawings depict Kent, Essex and Hertfordshire; Fair Head, Ireland; and Sintra, Portugal.

The dates ascribed to certain of the drawings suggest they could be capriccios, otherwise worked up from preliminary sketches.
