Johann Jakob Frey war ein Schweizer Landschaftsmaler.
Johann Jakob Frey reiste ausgiebig in Italien, vor allem in und um Rom, und fertigte Landschaftsskizzen an. In seinem Atelier verwendete er diese Skizzen, um Gemälde zu schaffen. Er reiste auch nach Spanien und Ägypten, um Skizzen für spätere Werke anzufertigen.
Freys Bildstil orientiert sich an den Gemälden von Josef Koch oder Franz Horny. So weisen sie häufig einen detailreichen Vordergrund auf, der oft Elemente wie verschlungene Wege oder Flüsse zeigt, die den Blick des Betrachters ablenken.
