Johann Jakob Frey était un peintre paysagiste suisse.
Johann Jakob Frey a beaucoup voyagé en Italie, en particulier à Rome et dans ses environs, et a réalisé des esquisses de paysages. Dans son atelier, il utilisait ces esquisses pour créer des peintures. Il s'est également rendu en Espagne et en Égypte pour réaliser des croquis en vue d'œuvres ultérieures.
Le style pictural de Frey s'inspire des peintures de Josef Koch ou de Franz Horny. Par exemple, ils représentent souvent un premier plan richement détaillé, qui montre souvent des éléments tels que des chemins sinueux ou des rivières qui attirent l'attention du spectateur au loin.
