KNIGHTS MAXIMILIAN I AND FERDINAND II ON HORSEBACK. HANAU CIRCA 1910 Bone Gothic Revival Early 20th century
An exceptional pair of antique silver-mounted table figures depicting Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire and King Ferdinand II of Aragon in full armor on caparisoned warhorses. Executed in Hanau around 1910, these figures embody the stylistic grandeur of historicism inspired by the Second Battle of the Spurs at Guinegate (1513). Each figure is richly detailed, with articulated visors revealing meticulously modeled faces. These equestrian compositions convey the chivalric splendor and sovereign symbolism of their subjects. The horses are clad in elaborate heraldic armor, echoed in the massive rectangular bases adorned with family crests, lending the works a monumental air. Fine craftsmanship is evident in every detail — from bridles and stirrups to weaponry and reins — showcasing the silversmith’s virtuosity.
