Post lot text
SCHOOL OF MICHELANGELO, HEAD OF A YOUNG MAN IN PROFILE, RED CHALK
The drawing bears the distinctive purple ink numbering that has been connected with the large collection of the Martelli family of Florence (N. Turner and P. Joannides, ‘Some drawings by Michelangelo and his circle in the Prado’, Boletín del Museo del Prado, XXI, no. 39, 2003, pp. 8-23). In analysing a group of similar studies also from the Martelli collection, Nicholas Turner and Paul Joannides have identified some sheets, now in the Prado, as by the hand of Michelangelo and other studies as by artists active in the master’s immediate circle. The present drawing belongs to the second group.
