Further details
FLEMISH SCHOOL 15th CENTURY, THE PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN AT THE TEMPLE; TWO SAINTS (SAINT JAMES THE LESS AND SAINT PHILIP ?), OIL ON PANEL, DOUBLE-SIDED
Iconographically, the main composition of the present painting can be compared with the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple by a follower of Rogier van der Weyden (1399/1400-1464) in the Real Palacio y Monasterio de San Lorenzo in El Escorial (see M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting. Rogier van der Weyden and the Master of Flémalle, Leiden-Brussels, 1967, II, pp. 76-77, no. 83, pl. 106). The subject of the reverse remains more of a mystery, however, a label on the verso does point to an interesting provenance for this mysterious double-sided painting.
A handwritten inscription seems to indicate that the painting was found in 1868 in an oak chest of drawers that had been bought by the author's grandfather, a certain D. Van Esnengem [?], on the death of Father Arnoldus Van Den Bon (1763-1820 or 1829), a priest attached to the Parc Abbey in Heverlee, near Leuven in Belgium, one of the major abbeys in the Southern Netherlands. Founded in 1129 by canons of the Premonstratensian order, the abbey was, and still is, a centre of religious culture. An example of this is the patronage of the painter Pierre-Joseph Verhagen (1728-1811) by the abbots of Le Parc in the second half of the eighteenth century (see J. E. Jansen, L'abbaye norbertine du Parc-Le-Duc. Huit siècles d'existence. 1129-1929, Mechelen, 1929, p. 205).
