Further details

GIOVAN GIOSEFFO DAL SOLE (1654-1719), POMONA : ALLEGORY OF SUMMER, OIL ON CANVAS, OVAL

In his 1739 book (op. cit. supra), Giampietro Zanotti, the first biographer of Giovan Gioseffo dal Sole (1654-1719), recounts that the Bolognese artist painted two oval canvases for Cardinal Aldrovandi, one depicting Zephyr, god of the winds, and the other Pomona. Following this commission, he painted a series of four pictures symbolizing the four seasons, for which spring and summer were based, with some minor modifications, on the cardinal's Zephyr and Pomona. To these two figures were added Ceres, goddess of agriculture and harvest (representing autumn), and Vulcan, smith of Olympus (symbolising winter).

Lost to view for two hundred and fifty years, the present painting came up for sale at Sotheby's in 1986, erroneously attributed to Luigi Garzi (1638-1721). Fortunately, at that time it was recognized as the work of dal Sole by Giovanna Lippi Bruni Taroni (op. cit. supra), and, more precisely, as the Pomona from the series of the four seasons mentioned by Zanotti. A comparison with the Aldrovandi Pomona (private collection) reveals the changes made by the artist between the two commissions. The first version contains only two putti and the composition is more compressed. In the present version, the artist has better mastered the balance between the figures by moving the putti away from the goddess, instilling the painting with a graceful airiness somewhat lacking in that of the cardinal.
