Further details
ITALIAN SCHOOL, 16TH CENTURY, MINERVA WITH A SHIELD AND A LANCE, BLACK CHALK, BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, ON BROWN PAPER
Due to the inscription in pen and brown ink in the lower right-hand corner, this impressive sheet has long been attributed to the Mannerist Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527-1596). The theme of Minerva with a shield bearing the effigy of Medusa at her feet can be found in a drawing by him in Teylers Museum, Haarlem, inv. 1854 (fig. 1; see C. van Tuyll van Serooskerken, The Italian Drawings of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries in Teylers Museum, Haarlem, 2000, no. 395, ill.). Despite the iconographic similarities, the style of the two drawings is different: the freedom of execution evident in the tree and the presence of broad highlights of white in the present drawing distinguish it from the meticulous execution of the sheet in Haarlem.
