Post lot text NETHERLANDISH SCHOOL, 16TH CENTURY, NUDE STUDY OF A MAN, SEEN FROM THE BACK, BLACK CHALK, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, ON LIGHT BROWN PAPERThe early fascination of Netherlandish artists for Michelangelo’s monumental and muscular conception of the body is evident from the work of Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574). The present, exceptionally large and powerful example may date from the latter’s – and Michelangelo’s – lifetime, after a bronze Écorché by Willem Danielsz van Tetrode (c. 1525-1580) (Christie's; 18 January 2015, lot 71).
