SECOND OR THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY, PROBABLY ITALIAN

‘Needle-painted’ or shaded silk embroidery depicting an allegory of Europe’s ‘discovery’ of the “New World” at center and the Four Continents or Four Corners of the World, worked primarily in long-and-short stitch with accents in buttonhole, stem, and satin stitches in hues of yellow, pink, green, blue, brown, apricot, and white of remarkable freshness; the edges finished with bobbin lace of gilt metallic-wrapped silk thread, and lined with silk
