Lot 129 | A GEORGE II SILVER TODDY LADLE
Estimate value
£ 3 000 – 5 000
MARK OF PHILLIPS GARDEN, LONDON, 1741
The bowl of conch shell form, with scroll bracket and spiral handle socket connecting to a turned-wood handle, the bowl engraved with a crest, marked on bowl
14 in. (35.6 cm.) long
gross weight 4 oz. 5 dwt. (133 gr.)
The crest of an ass' head rising out of a ducal coronet is borne by the Chamberlain, Mainwaring, Trussell and Woolridge families, however, a basket, also by Phillips Garden, sold from the collection of Giorgio Marsan and Umberta Nasi, Christie's, London, 13 December 2007, lot 41, was engraved with the arms of Mainwaring impaling Atkins, which suggests the crest is most likely that of Mainwaring.
