A GEORGE III SUNDERLAND OR SHAFTESBURY GLASS WINE BARREL ON SILVER STAND

THE FRAME MARK OF JOHN ROBERTSON I AND DAVID DARLING, NEWCASTLE, CIRCA 1795

The glass barrel applied with spiral trails, mounted with an Old Sheffield Plate tap with later wood finial, a cork bung mounted with a plated ring handle, the reeded silver frame with hinged straps and revolving stand mounted on four wheels, the barrel engraved at one end with a coat-of-arms surmounted by a crest, the other end with the monogram HVT below the crest, the silver-mounted cork stopper with later monogram GRV, marked on stand

16 1/4 in. (41.3 cm.) long

36 oz. 7 dwt. (1,132 gr.) weighable silver

The arms and monogram are for Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Bt. (1771-1813).

The cypher is that of King George V (1910-1936) of Great Britain and Ireland.





Provenance

Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, 2nd Bt. (1771-1813), presumably to his only daughter and heir, Frances Anne Emily, Marchioness of Londonderry (1800-1865).
