Estimate value
£ 3 000 – 5 000
A German Ferial Psalter
A Bifolium of a Ferial Psalter in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum [Germany, late 12th or early 13th century].
A handsome example of very regular early Gothic script, with modest decoration.

c.310 × 220mm. 20 lines per page in a fine early gothic script, with incipits in majuscules stroked in red, the text comprising Psalms 118:133–160 and 124:1–127:6, each psalm with a large initial alternately red or green, most with ornament in red or blue, Psalms 125 and 127 each preceded by an antiphon, the former decorated with a red and green puzzle initial (some overall wear, darkening, and creases, but generally in good condition)

Provenance:
(1) From a German-speaking private collection, to judge by modern pencil annotations.
(2) Colker MS 475; acquired in 1997 from Maggs.

In addition to the 150 Psalms, a Ferial Psalter includes the incipits for antiphons sung with the psalms during the week as part of the Divine Office.
